Cantor Abbe Sher serves as the Cantor at Temple Judea of Manhasset. The Cantor or Hazzan is the “musical messenger” of the Jewish community leading the congregation in prayer. Music has always played a central role in Jewish worship. We learn from the Torah portion Exodus, chapter
15:21, that Miriam and the woman took timbrals and dancing and singing praised God. Sacred music enables us to express our emotions and connect with God and fellow congregants. Throughout our history, music has been inextricably linked to prayer. The Siddur establishes the order of our worship service and the music gives it expression and emotion. Singing together as a congregation connects us to one another as well as the text being sung. In the past 50 years there has been a tremendous amount of new music composed / created for the Reform Movement. Some of Cantor Sher’s favorites include the music of Meir Finkelstein, Michael Isaacson, Craig Taubman and Debbie Friedman.
