Cantor Abbe Sher

Cantor Abbe Sher serves as the Cantor at Temple Judea of Manhasset. The Cantor or Hazzan is the “musical messenger” of the Jewish community leading the congregation in prayer. Music has always played a central role in Jewish worship. We learn from the Torah portion Exodus, chapter 15:21, that Miriam and the woman took timbrals and dancing and singing praised God.  Sacred music enables us to express our emotions and connect with God and fellow congregants. Throughout our history, music has been inextricably linked to prayer. The siddur establishes the order of our worship service and the music gives it expression and emotion. Singing together as a congregation connects us to one another as well as the text being sung.  In the past 50 years there has been a tremendous amount of new music composed / created for the Reform Movement. Some of Cantor Sher’s favorites include the music of Meir Finkelstein, Michael Isaacson, Craig Taubman and Debbie Friedman.

Cantor Sher studied for the cantorate at the Academy for Jewish Religion in Riverdale New York where Cantorial students are educated in contemporary Liturgical music as well as traditional Nusach. Cantor Sher earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.  She also received a Master’s Degree in Opera from Boston University’s School for the Arts and an Artist Diploma in Opera from Boston Conservatory of Music.

Cantor Sher previously served Temple Or Elohim in Jericho, New York for 9 years and served as a student Cantor at B’nai Israel in Oakdale for 6 years.  She has served as Cantor in Residence at Crane Lake Camp, (a URJ summer camp) as well as Carillon Nursing Facility in Huntington, N.Y. Her love of animals has lead to involvement with Angel’s Gate Hospice in Fort Salonga where she has lead healing services for the chronically ill animal residents.

Cantor Sher has coordinated and performed in many Cantorial Concert Fund Raisers, including most recently, the commemorative concert for Cantor David Tauber at North Shore Synagogue in Syosset, New York. Cantor Sher also enjoys singing all kinds of music, especially Broadway Show Tunes!

Cantor Sher is the proud mother of Mia who is a Junior at the University of Massachusetts and Nathaniel who will become a Bar Mitzvah in 2010. She also shares her life with numerous furry friends and loves to garden, read and cook!
