RITUAL  PRACTICES

Since we consider ourselves a “Family,” we attempt to meet not only the spiritual but also the emotional needs of our Congregants.  Therefore, in times of stress, illness, death, or other problems, please inform the office and special contacts will be made to have the Rabbi, Cantor, Pastoral or Caring Committees make the necessary arrangements for minyans, hospital visits, or other assistance as needed.

The dynamics and spiritual quality of our worship services reflect the individual and collective interests of our members, bridging their generations and diversity with ease.

WORSHIP

Our High Holiday Services are included in the dues for members and their children (6-25 unmarried).  In addition to the usual services, we include the second day of Rosh Hashonah, Children’s Services on the afternoon of the first day, & Yom Kippur afternoon.   These special services, as well as Yizkor and the final Yom Kippur Services are open to the entire community.

Morning Yizkor Services are held on the final day of Passover, Sukkot and Shavuot.

Our regular Friday Evening Services begin at 8 pm. The second Shabbat of the month is a complete but shortened Family Service.  We encourage families to attend and participate.   All our services include a “Mishaberach.”  Scattered through the year there are “Special Events” celebrated at Friday  night services, these include anniversaries, monthly birthdays, plaque dedications, baby namings and aufrufs, as well as topical speakers.

                                      RITUAL LIFE CYCLE EVENTS

 BABY NAMINGS AND/OR BRIS
Traditionally, boys are named at a Bris and girls are named at Friday evening Shabbat Services.  At Temple Judea, both males and females may be named in Temple if each child has at least one Jewish parent.  To schedule a baby naming, please contact the Temple office at least one month in advance with two or three possible dates in mind when the parents and child will be able to be present.  The fee involved are made through the Temple office.

BAR/BAT MITZVAH
Saturday Morning Services are at 10:30, and for most of the year include our Bar and Bat Mitzvah candidates.  We also have Havdalah Services held once a month, which on a Saturday evening.  Bar/Bat Mitzvah dates are scheduled at the end of the fourth year of Hebrew School.  To schedule a Kiddush or Reception at the Temple with our caterer, Newman & Leventhal, please contact Jeffrey Torem directly at 516 621-8161 as soon as you receive your date.  If you do not wish to use the caterer, but would like to have a Kiddush following a Saturday morning service, contact our Executive Director at 516 621-8049.  Approximately nine months prior to your event, a meeting is held with all parents of the Bar/Bat Mitvah.  In addition to the parents, the Rabbi, the Cantor,Temple President and Executive Director are usually present at this meeting.  All procedures, logistics and options are discussed.  We encourage parents to bring their child to this Bar/Bat Mitvah meeting.

CONFIRMATION
It is our expectation and hope that every Bar/Bat Mitzvah child will continue on to Confirmation, which culminates in the Confirmation Service at the end of the tenth grade following weekly classes taught by the Rabbi.  The Confirmation Service is on the Friday night of Shavuot, and is conducted by the Confirmation class.  A requirement for Confirmation is regular attendance at Sabbath Services and the performance of Mitzvoth prior to Confirmation.    The Confirmand’s families hosts a Special Oneg Shabbat.  The fees  involved would cover the cost of gowns, photographs, flowers and the Oneg Shabbat.

AUFRUFS
Blessings of soon to be married couples are, by our tradition, held on a Sabbath prior to the nuptials.  This event takes place at Friday evening Shabbat Services.  To schedule an Aufruf, call the Temple office as far in advance as possible with two or three dates in mind when the couple can be present.  The fee involved can be discussed with the Temple office.

WEDDINGS
A wedding held at Temple Judea is arranged through the caterer, Howard Braverman of Newman & Leventhal.  He may be reached directly at 516 621-8161.  We suggest that prior to finalizing the date with the caterer, you contact the Rabbi to coordinate his availability on your possible date.  If the wedding is not being held at Temple Judea, you will need to personally arrange with the Rabbi and/or Cantor their availability for the ceremony prior to scheduling any firm dates.  The prospective wedding couple should schedule an appointment with the Rabbi a few months prior to the marriage.

FUNERALS
The sanctuary at the Temple may be used for the funeral of a member in good standing, or his or her current spouse, child, or grandchild. Please note, that if this is the case, you must make your arrangements with our Sexton, David Rubin of Riverside Nassau North Chapel in Great Neck.  If you would like the Rabbi and/or Cantor to officiate either at the temple or at any funeral home, please contact them through the temple office before scheduling the date and time.  Minyans during the Shiva period can be arranged through the Temple office.  In addition to the Rabbi and Cantor, there is a experienced Pastoral Committee when requested.

OUR TEMPLE IS THERE FOR YOU
For illness, death or other times of need, a congregant might want to talk to the Rabbi or Cantor.  If you cannot reach either of them directly, kindly call the temple office for assistance.

Members of our Pastoral Committee are also available to reach out to support a congregant in need of special services.  If you need someone to visit a hospitalized patient or someone ill at home or to conduct services during a period of mourning or other times of need, please call the temple office and arrangements will be made to have someone contact you directly.
