TEMPLE JUDEA SENDS DONATIONS TO TEXAS HURRICANE VICTIMS
In two short days, a group of dedicated congregants gathered, organized and filled cartons with donated items brought over by generous members of Temple Judea of Manhasset to be shipped to Houston to meet the needs of the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
This was the outcome of a vision by Lauren Chizner, Rabbi Chizner’s wife who has a personal connection to Texas having been born and raised there. Lauren’s vision led to a consortium of nine Long Island synagogues, representing Reform, Conservative and Orthodox, all of whom reached out to their congregations who responded generously to her request.
One large truck was rented, then a second one added when it was realized that one truck would be insufficient to handle all the donations. Each truck was filled stopping at each of the nine synagogues to gather up the donations. In all approximately 25,000 pounds of donations were collected.
In addition to donations of food, medical and cleaning supplies, toiletries, bottled water and baby goods, close to $10,000 in gift cards were donated.
This was truly Tikkkun Olam, “saving the world” in its best sense.
See the Newly Renovated Temple Judea
Renovations of our Sanctuary, Oneg/Cocktail Room, which has been expanded into the Social Hall, Ballroom, Lobby, and Restrooms have been completed. This major renovation has been done by Hasson Caterers and us. Below, please see current pictures of our Sanctuary, Oneg/Cocktail room, Ballroom and Lobby. In addition to interior renovations, we have added new landscaping and have enhanced our driveway and entrance walkway.
Every Wednesday morning at 10:30 am to 11:30 am, a group of men and women meet in the Library to study with Rabbi Chizner, the many aspects of Torah and the meaning for our lives today.
Each meeting starts with reading a specific section of Torah, continuing from the portion read the last time. Lively discussions are part of this extraordinary experience.
Members (and friends) are invited to join any Wednesday morning. All are welcome. Some members of the group have recently joined and others have continued their participation for six or seven years.
People who come to each meeting have a variety of backgrounds and levels of Jewish education. . Everyone leaves at the end of each group meeting with new insights into everyday experiences based on the rich and amazingly astute words that were written over five thousand years ago.
