Large Effort for Victims of Hurricane Harvey

In two short days, a group of dedicated congregants gathered, organized and filled cartons with donated items brought over by generous members of Temple Judea of Manhasset to be shipped to Houston to meet the needs of the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

This was the outcome of a vision by Lauren Chizner, Rabbi Chizner’s wife who has a personal connection to Texas having been born and raised there. Lauren’s vision led to a consortium of nine Long Island synagogues, representing Reform, Conservative and Orthodox, all of whom reached out to their congregations who responded generously to her request.

One large truck was rented, then a second one added when it was realized that one truck would be insufficient to handle all the donations. Each truck was filled stopping at each of the nine synagogues to gather up the donations. In all approximately 25,000 pounds of donations were collected.

In addition to donations of food, medical and cleaning supplies, toiletries, bottled water and baby goods, close to $10,000 in gift cards were donated.

This was truly Tikkkun Olam, “saving the world” in its best sense.
